Research Assistant I/II (Laboratory Chemist)

Job Summary        
The individual selected for this position will provide professional laboratory research assistance related to crop-livestock production systems.

This is a one year limited term position and is funded from external sources. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.

Essential Functions                
Daily functions will include analyzing samples (plant, soil, water, manure), performing QA and QC and managing data into a central database. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Assist in method development.
• Assure that analytical and other laboratory equipment are properly maintained and operational.
• Assist with and/or prepare results for publication or presentations at research conferences and extension meetings.
• Assist in sample collection during field visits. Occasional travel will be required.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
• Chemistry, Biology, Soil and Plant Science, or closely related field.
• No experience required for level I; Salary Range $28,000 - $46,700
• Relevant work experience in coordination of lab operations, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, development of wet chemical procedures.

Research Assistant II: Bachelor’s degree in areas listed above and 2 years of relevant work experience in coordination of lab operations, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, development of wet chemical procedures.

Salary Range $31,300 – $52,100

Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.

When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Must have strong analytical skills and knowledge of laboratory safety procedures.

Advanced knowledge of ICP-AES, Discrete or Continuous Flow Analyzer, CNS analyzer, HPLC, Ion chromatography.

A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment is required. The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

Desired Qualifications          
Master’s degree in chemistry, soil chemistry, or related analytical chemistry scientific field.

Salary Range: $31,300 - $65,500
